The Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky is a residential program on the campus of Western Kentucky University for bright, highly motivated Kentucky high school students who have demonstrated interests in pursuing advanced careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Students enhance their creativity, curiosity, reasoning ability, and self-discipline through the companionship of peers, university courses, faculty-led research, and study abroad, preparing them for leadership roles in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
Other than Simon’s Rock, few institutions have had as much of an impact on both the lives of individual students and the ongoing national conversation about education. Founded in 1966 by an extraordinary innovator, Elizabeth Blodgett Hall, and led since 1979 by another, Leon Botstein, Simon’s Rock has been the locus of a radical rethinking of higher education. In its early decades, it was the only institution of its kind. Today, the Simon’s Rock idea serves as the organizing principle for a nation-wide movement of public and private institutions providing higher education to younger scholars, and Bard College at Simon’s Rock is the founding site of the nationally recognized Bard Early College network.
As the Simon’s Rock idea has taken root beyond the Simon’s Rock campus, the realization that many students can and should start college early has become less of a curiosity and more of an assumption in higher education. In defining a groundbreaking model, and in providing leadership and advocacy, we’ve successfully convened a context in which families are empowered to consider not only where to go to college, but when.
Founded in 2015, Bard Academy at Simon’s Rock provides bright, highly motivated adolescents the opportunity to get an even earlier start to their education by taking a collegiate approach to learning from day one.

Ideal Schools High School opened in 2008 as the first and only co-educational independent high school in Loudoun County, Virginia. Dr. Deep Sran founded the school after 15 years of research on and practice in how to improve formal education, as an attorney, academic researcher, college and graduate school instructor, high school teacher, and high school administrator. In 2012, the school added grades 6 through 8 and was renamed Loudoun School for the Gifted, to reflect the school’s focus and academic program.
This school exists to show how much better school can be, and to serve as an incubator for new ideas and practices in secondary education. Our goal is, simply, to offer the finest education possible, and to continue to innovate and to improve until we meet our own very high standards for what is possible in secondary education.
